Summary:
There are two girls in this story, "Mountain girl",Pan-pan, she lives in village and near mountains,and "River Girl" Shui-lian who is lives near rivers. They are from different provinces of China but both of them have problems and wanted to get out of their hometown. They are poor and wanted to find jobs in the big cities- Beijing and Shanghai.
They met each other on the way to their dream places and they stayed there for working in a factory to earn some money.
The author wrote first several chapters in two different sights:how Pan-pan sees the world and how Shui-lian lives, the story shows the fact of farmers or coolies who lives very hard in China.
